Characterizing Urban Expansion Combining Concentric-Ring and Grid-Based Analysis for Latin American Cities

چکیده

Spatio-temporal characterization of urban expansion is the first step towards understanding how cities grow in space. We summarize two approaches used measurement, namely, concentric-ring analysis and grid-based analysis. Concentric-ring divides areas into a series rings, which to quantify distance decay elements from city centers. Grid-based partitions regular grids that are interpret local dynamics growth. combined these characterize between 2000–2014 for five large Latin American (São Paulo, Brazil; Mexico City, Mexico; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Bogotá, Columbia; Santiago, Chile). Results show land (built-up area) density concentric rings decreases centers fringe, can be well fitted by an inverse S curve. Parameters fitting curves reflect disparities extents form among over time. presents transformation population central suburban areas, where new mostly expands. In global context, America far less rapid than countries or regions experiencing fast urbanization, such as Asia Africa. Urban particularly compact because their rugged topographies with natural limitations.

The spatial structure of Latin American cities.

"Using published census data, metropolitan area population and employment statistics are constructed for several large Latin American cities in 1950, 1960, and 1970, and compared to similar statistics from selected North American cities. The Latin cities are experiencing decentralization of population and some decentralization of employment. Overall population density patterns of large Latin ci...

Accessibility and Urban Development: a Grid-based Comparative Statistical Analysis of Dutch Cities

Accessibility has become a key issue in modern urban planning. This paper aims to identify the impact of differences in spatial accessibility on the development of the built environment in cities. Using a few simple accessibility indicators, it tries to map out in a quantitative way the detailed implications of accessibility conditions for built-up areas, on the basis of a 25x25m grid cell appr...

Transport and health: a look at three Latin American cities.

Transport is associated with environmental problems, economic losses, health and social inequalities. A number of European and US cities have implemented initiatives to promote multimodal modes of transport. In Latin America changes are occurring in public transport systems and a number of projects aimed at stimulating non-motorized modes of transport (walking and cycling) have already been imp...

Simulating Block-Level Urban Expansion for National Wide Cities

Large-scale models are generally associated with large spatial modelling units, for example, counties or super grids (several to dozens of km2). Few applied urban models can achieve a large spatial coverage with irregular spatial units due to data availability and computation load. The framework of automatic identification and characterization of blocks developed by Liu and Long (2016) makes su...
